November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month!
In 1983, then President Ronald Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer’s Awareness month. Then, in 1994 he wrote a letter to the American people that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease himself. A stark reminder that Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias strike without consideration of education, financial status, race, or creed. His declaration of his disease went a very long way in decreasing the stigma of Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias.
When you and your family are touched in some way by the disease of Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias, you feel alone and confused, and frightened about what the future holds. You are not alone. Speak out, talk to friends, family, and professionals about how you are feeling and the things you are worried about. This will help lead to finding the best care and coping resources available. Surrounding yourself with others who understand and care about your journey will be reassuring as you travel your path.
